Breakthrough In Magnetic Separation Technique

Ventures Accelerated exploring the Skid during our visit to Magic Bioprocessing
Peter Karlberg, CEO Magic BioProcessing shares exciting news: ”We’re thrilled to unveil the MAGic™ Accio PROCESS, the world’s first scalable magnetic separation platform for bioprocess scale – designed to transform downstream purification.” This breakthrough was just reported by Ventures Accelerated´s portfolio and client company Magic BioProcessing, marking a milestone both for the company as well as bioprocessing separation.
Intensified upstream processes have made cell clarification a major downstream bottleneck in monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. The MAGic™ Accio PROCESS developed by the Uppsala-based company is the first scalable magnetic separation skid, now able to replace both centrifugation/filtration and column capture with a single, integrated magnetic step.
Why is this prototype such a significant milestone for you?
Developing our own prototype represents a major milestone for our team. Creating equipment that did not previously exist is not only a source of pride but, more importantly, a demonstration of the feasibility of our technology. Bringing this system to life validates our hypothesis in a real-world setting and marks a critical step toward practical implementation and future commercialization.
How will you get the word out on the capacity you are building?
Our next step is focused on implementation and on-site testing. As this is our first prototype, we will collaborate closely with major pharmaceutical companies in Europe and the United States to integrate our magnetic separation system into their manufacturing workflows. These collaborations will not only validate the technology under real-world conditions but also showcase its scalability and impact to key industry stakeholders.
Tell us about the journey towards putting this technology to work!
The journey began well before my time at MAGic and was initiated by our CTO, Kristofer Eriksson, together with Per-Olov Eriksson. Our first evaluations date back to 2017, when we tested a pilot-scale proof of concept within the AdBIOPRO consortium in collaboration with PhD student Nils Brechmann at KTH. The results were published in a peer-reviewed article and laid the foundation for developing our own large-scale equipment. From the outset, we knew that creating a truly scalable magnetic separation device would require new engineering solutions. We designed and built the equipment, overcoming key technical challenges. The result is a highly innovative, automation-ready system that not only resolves current manufacturing bottlenecks but also has the potential to transform the future of biologics manufacturing.
In Brief: Why it’s a Game-Changer
Single-Step Clarification & Capture – Streamline operations and eliminate traditional bottlenecks.
Cost, Speed & Yield Optimization – Achieve up to 38% COGs reduction and higher throughput.
Sustainable Footprint – Lower water, buffer, and consumable usage.
